CHICAGO — Back-to-school shoppers will spend more than last year, but make fewer trips to the store, according to ShopperTrak here, which monitors foot traffic in stores and shopping centers.

The group on Wednesday predicted that national retail sales would rise 3.8% as compared with the same period last year, but foot traffic will decrease 2.9%.

Back-to-school sales and traffic have historically served as a key indicator for the winter holiday shopping season for retailers, ShopperTrack added.
