Store-brand sundae cones bearing the Publix, Giant and Stop & Shop brand labels, and containing peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America, were recalled yesterday.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Store-brand sundae cones bearing the Publix, Giant and Stop & Shop brand labels, and containing peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America, were recalled yesterday.

Earlier this week, ingredient supplier PCA expanded its recall to include all of the peanut products manufactured in its Blakely, Ga., plant since Jan. 1, 2007. That includes all peanuts, both dry- and oil-roasted; granulated peanuts; peanut meal; and peanut butter.

The step was taken after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered that during the past two years, PCA’s internal tests revealed Salmonella contamination about a dozen times in the Blakely plant.

More than 500 people from 43 states and one from Canada have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium. Of those, 22% were hospitalized, and eight deaths are believed to have resulted from infection. Although half of those infected are under 16 years old, the deaths occurred in persons 59 years or older.
