Most Moms Will Dip Into Kids' Candy

MINNEAPOLIS — The vast majority of U.S. moms — 92% — will raid their kids' candy bags after trick-or-treating, finds a new poll from Supervalu.

More than 40% of mothers polled are on the hunt for chocolate, with Snickers bars (18%), Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (14%) and Twix (8%) the most desirable.

As for children's preferences, 39% like “all types of candy,” followed by chocolate at 37%. Their least favorites are hard candy and licorice (10% each), candy corn 9%, and gum and nuts (4% each).

While 80% of moms don’t limit the amount of candy their kids collect, nine in 10 regulate the amount they consume. Nearly three-quarters of moms let their children have one to four pieces of candy per day until it’s gone. From a kid’s perspective, 8% are allowed to eat five to 10 pieces a day.

“It’s clear from the survey that the entire family likes to treat themselves — literally and figuratively — on Halloween,” said Jeff Strawn, Supervalu’s director of candy, in a statement. “According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend about $21 each on Halloween candy this year.”
