NACDS Urges Congress to Revise Health Care Reform

This week the National Association of Chain Drug Stores sent a letter to Congressional leaders asking for pro-patient, pro-pharmacy provisions in health care reform.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — This week the National Association of Chain Drug Stores sent a letter to Congressional leaders asking for pro-patient, pro-pharmacy provisions in health care reform.

NACDS said it supports the government’s efforts to reform the health care system. “With a community pharmacy within two miles of any U.S. resident on average, pharmacies are the most accessible point of access into the health care system,” NACDS stated on its Web site.

The association offered recommendations to Congress including reform of Medicaid “Average Manufacturer Price” payment for generic drugs to ensure fair reimbursement rates and pharmacy services, improvement of health quality through coverage of Medication Therapy Management, and to utilize pharmacies for treatment of chronic disease and access to prevention services.

Over 100 pro-pharmacy policy advocates, and NACDS, will meet in Washington from June 16 -17 to speak with members of Congress about the importance of pro-pharmacy policy and the need for health care reform.

Yesterday, President Barack Obama described the two-month period before the Congressional recess in August as a ‘make- or-break’ period to pass health care reform. On the same day, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, vowed that the health care reform would occur this year.
