Northern California Operators Donate to Food Drive

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At the request of Gov. Arnold Schwazenegger, several food companies operating in Northern California donated more than 120 pallets of non-perishable foods earlier this week.

Half the pallets were delivered to the steps of the State Capitol as a symbolic gesture during a tree-lighting ceremony, while the other half went directly to a distribution center here handling food for the WE Can Food Drive. The donations came from Costco Wholesale Co., Raley's Supermarkets, Safeway and Save Mart Supermarkets.

Ronald Fong, president and chief executive officer of the California Grocers Association, said the governor's office called CGA Monday asking for donations, and those donations were delivered the following morning. CGA said the food will be distributed through the California Emergency Foodlink to rural emergency-feeding agencies throughout the state.
