SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — For every new Facebook fan it gets this month, Price Chopper Supermarkets will donate $1, up to $3,500, to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Milk-Bone, Kibbles n' Bits, 9 Lives and Nestlé Purina are co-sponsoring the promotion. It’s all part of what Price Chopper has designated “Pet Month,” a “celebration of pet ownership and adoption.”

Price Chopper is publicizing that it has added flea, tick and heartworm medications to its pharmacies. Available brands include Frontline Plus, K9 Advantix and Heartguard Plus.

“We know that your pets are important to you, so when you need medication for your pet you can count on Price Chopper Pharmacy,” Price Chopper wrote in its blog.

Among other pet-month activities:

• Price Chopper partnered with Milk-Bone to donate a Canine Assistants service dog to a person in need.

• Price Chopper partnered with Iams to sponsor the Fireplug 500 Walk for Animals, Sept. 11, in Central Park, Schenectady.

• The retailer has designated Sept. 26 “Pet Day.” It will host in-store discussions on pet first aid and grooming. Attendees can enter for a chance to win a one-year supply of Purina dog or cat food. Dog and cat adoptions will also be available.
