Recycling Earns Discounts at The Fresh Grocer

DREXEL HILL, Pa. — The Fresh Grocer here, a seven-store operator in the Philadelphia area, said that over 3,000 shoppers were able to redeem a coupon for $5 off a $40 purchase this year with points earned from recycling as part of Philadelphia’s Recycling Rewards program.

The program, powered by Recyclebank, lets residents earn redeemable points just for recycling each week.

The number of coupon redemptions may rise as a result of an announcement by Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael Nutter at The Fresh Grocer on North Broad Street that food and beverage cartons are now recyclable as a part of the city’s residential curbside recycling program.

"Adding carton recycling to the City’s program is both exciting and innovative, and I expect to see many more coupon redemptions as a result," said Patrick J. Burns, president and chief executive officer of The Fresh Grocer, in a statement. "This program certainly aligns with our mission to help improve the environment, plus it enables us to reward our customers and neighbors for their personal commitment to make our City a better place."
