Report: Healthy Food Sales Are Sluggish

Sales of healthy foods inched up 1.8% in 2009 to keep pace with the growth of overall foods, but the news isn’t exactly positive when compared to previous annual growth, according to the 2010 Healthy Foods Report, produced by SN’s sister company New Hope Natural Media for its Nutrition Business Journal.

BOULDER, Colo. — Sales of healthy foods inched up 1.8% in 2009 to keep pace with the growth of overall foods, but the news isn’t exactly positive when compared to previous annual growth, according to the 2010 Healthy Foods Report, produced by SN’s sister company New Hope Natural Media for its Nutrition Business Journal.

It found that annual growth rates of healthy food, including organics, natural, functional and “lesser-evil foods,”— which account for $143 billion in sales — continue to slip, but may be nearing bottom.

The report projects that healthy food sales will improve modestly in the coming years to reach 23% penetration by 2017.
