Retailers to Boost Deployment of Service-Based Software: Gartner

Software-as-a-service (SaaS) — the software model by which companies such as retailers access an application via the Internet rather than install it internally on their systems — will experience a 25% increase in deployment by retailers in 2009, according to a new study by Gartner.

In a year when Gartner predicts retailers’ capital expenditures will be cut by as much as 50%, SaaS “allows CIOs to deliver IT functionality without spending cap ex dollars,” said Hung LeHong, research vice president for Gartner. SaaS also allows retailers to adopt applications like price optimization they otherwise would not have the internal resources to adopt, noted LeHong.
