Retailers Wait For FDA To Test Formula

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Price Chopper Supermarkets won’t stock Enfamil Premium Newborn formula until it gets the all-clear from the Food and Drug Administration, spokeswoman Mona Golub told SN, Wednesday.

“The only testing that’s gone on up until this point is by Mead Johnson, but the FDA’s conclusion is the ultimate conclusion,” she said.

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control are seeking to determine the origin of a rare bacteria that has sickened two infants and caused the death of another, according to reports.

Price Chopper, Wal-Mart Stores, Walgreens and Supervalu voluntarily pulled Enfamil Premium Newborn formula after a Missouri baby who consumed it died. As an added precaution Price Chopper phoned households who purchased the “slow moving” product, Golub said.

Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Supervalu are also reportedly awaiting word from the FDA before returning Enfamil to shelves. But Mead Johnson maintains that the batch of formula in question passed safety tests before entering the market, and a second round showed similar results.

Federal investigators are also testing distilled water and other powdered formulas since one of the infected infants did not consume Enfamil, according to reports.
