WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Union workers at Safeway stores here have rejected a proposed contract offer and given officials the authorization to call a strike, the union said. The workers, represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832, voted by 97% to reject Safeway’s latest proposal and gave permission for union officials to call a strike. Negotiations between the union, representing 3,300 Safeway workers in Manitoba, and Safeway resume next week.
