Safeway Only Food Retailer on Best Corporate Citizens List

Safeway has been named to Corporate Responsibility Officer (CRO) Magazine’s list of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” for 2009.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway here has been named to Corporate Responsibility Officer (CRO) Magazine’s list of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” for 2009.

Safeway ranks 99th in the 10th annual ranking of corporate responsibility performance of major U.S. companies. No other food retailer made the list, but several CPG manufacturers did, including General Mills (ranked second), Kimberly-Clark (9), Procter & Gamble (14), Heinz (30), Sara Lee (38), Hormel (40), Coca-Cola (56), Colgate-Palmolive (73) and PepsiCo (85).

First published in 2000 by Business Ethics Magazine, the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” list is based on publicly available information and ranks Russell 1000 companies on their performance in seven areas: environment, climate change, human rights, philanthropy, employee relations, finance and governance.
