MODESTO, Calif. — Save Mart Stores here said yesterday that Steve Junqueiro, chief operating officer since May, has added the title of president. That position had been vacant since Bob Spengler retired as president last January. Bob Piccinini remains chairman and chief executive officer. Save Mart operates 245 stores in California and northern Nevada, with sales of approximately $5.1 billion.

Junqueiro, 53, has been with Save Mart since 1974, starting as a produce clerk and moving through the ranks of produce manager, produce merchandiser, produce operations supervisor and director of produce and floral before being named corporate vice president, operations, in 2004 and executive vice president in early 2007. He worked closely with Spengler in the process of converting 128 former Albertsons stores to the Save Mart and Lucky banners during 2007.

During his years in the produce industry he assisted the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agriculture Service in projects in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and India, offering advice on ways to improve the handling, distribution and marketing of perishables foods.

Junqueiro was chairman of the Produce Marketing Association in 2005.
