SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Services were held here for grocery industry veteran Burton Weinbaum, 77, who passed away Dec. 15. Weinbaum spent his entire 40-year career in the grocery industry, which he said was both his business and his hobby.

Weinbaum began his career at Stop & Shop in 1957, holding a variety of positions of increasing responsibility rising from management trainee to general manager of the Connecticut Division. He went on to spend many years as a corporate officer of A&P, serving as corporate vice president, president of the Northeast Group, and finally serving as special assistant to the chairman of the board until his retirement in 1997.

Weinbaum dedicated himself to many charitable causes and food industry organizations and was named the 1975 Connecticut Food Stores Association Man of the Year. He felt obligated and proud to mentor those around him and became a visiting executive with the Skidmore College Business Advisory Council for more than 10 years. Weinbaum had a 20-plus year relationship with the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic where he served as chairman and then treasurer for many years of the Tip-Off Classic executive committee.
