NEW YORK — SN has selected Safeway, United Natural Foods and PCC Natural Markets as the winners of its 2008 Sustainability Excellence Awards in the chain, wholesaler and independent categories, respectively. The awards, based on online nominations submitted by the industry in August, are intended to recognize companies that have demonstrated an unusual commitment to resource conservation and environmental stewardship. This is the first of what will be an annual awards program. Detailed profiles of the winners’ sustainability initiatives can be found in the Sept. 8 issue of SN.
