Sobeys Cuts Prices in Western Canada

STELLARTON, Nova Scotia — Sobeys here has introduced a new price investment program at its stores in Canada's Western provinces in a move some said was sparked by the expansion of Target and Wal-Mart in the country.

Ad fliers beginning late last week detailed "thousands" of everyday lower prices at Sobeys stores in Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

A company spokesman wasn’t immediately available for comment, but a published report this week said company officials implemented the price program to address Sobeys' price image in the Western provinces ahead of anticipated arrival of Target, which early this year acquired the chain in Canada, and the ongoing expansion of Walmart Supercenters there.

A spokesman quoted in the Winnipeg Free Press described the program as a "major investment in price," and said the reductions would be permanent.
