SoCal Unions Extend Contract

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 770 said the seven UFCW locals in Southern California have agreed to a contract extension with the region's major supermarket chains.

LOS ANGELES — The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 770 here said Friday the seven UFCW locals in Southern California have agreed to a contract extension with the region's major supermarket chains.

The local said the contract, which was scheduled to expire Sunday at midnight, has been extended through the end of March to allow negotiations to continue. The contract covers approximately 62,000 clerks and meat cutters at the area's three major chains — Albertsons, a division of Supervalu, Minneapolis; Ralphs, a division of Kroger Co., Cincinnati; and Vons, a division of Safeway, Plesanton, Calif. — as well as Gelson's Markets, Encino, Callf.; and Stater Bros. Markets, San Bernardino, Calif.

A UFCW spokesman told SN the unions will meet with Gelson's and Stater Bros. next week and resume talks with the area's three major chains on March 14.
