GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores here said Friday it has launched a program to provide discounts on groceries and gas to General Motors workers who have lost their jobs due to the May closure of the GM Metal Fabricating Plant in Wyoming, Mich.

Spartan has also offered the program to United Auto Workers locals in eastern Michigan and Traverse City, Mich.

The company provided 850 "Michigan Proud" cards to the UAW regional office for distribution to the workers affected by the plant closing, offering a 10% discount on groceries and a 3% discount on fuel through July 12 at any D&W Fresh Market, Family Fare, Felpausch, Glen’s Markets, Glen’s Fresh Marketplace or VG’s Michigan location.

"The Michigan Proud card is our way of showing appreciation for the contributions of auto workers and positive impact they have on our communities and families by lessening the expense of food and fuel during this challenging time," said Alan Hartline, executive vice president, merchandising and marketing, Spartan.
