PHILADELPHIA — Judith A. Spires has resigned as president of Supervalu’s Acme chain to accept a position with an unidentified employer, according to local press reports here Tuesday. Her resignation is effective this Friday.

Spires, a 40-year veteran of Albertsons, had been president of the 124-store Acme chain since 2006. Before that, she was president of Albertsons’ Dallas-Fort Worth division.

Pete Van Helden, executive vice president of retail operations for Minneapolis-based Supervalu, will assume Spires’ responsibilities on an interim basis, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Spires is the latest in a series of high-level executives who have left Supervalu in the past year, including Ron Dennis, who retired earlier this month as president of Farm Fresh.
