St. Louis Workers Approve New Contract

Union employees of Schnuck Markets, Dierbergs and Shop 'n Save stores voted to approve a new contract, union sources said.

ST. LOUIS — Union employees of Schnuck Markets, Dierbergs and Shop 'n Save stores here on Monday voted to approve a new contract, union sources said.

The new contract covers more than 9,000 workers at 104 stores in metro St. Louis and will be in effect until May of 2013. Workers approved the deal by 86%. Highlights of the agreement include wage bonuses in the first year ranging from $750 for full-time clerks to $325 for part-time clerks. Workers will receive a 20-cents per hour raise in the second year of the contract and a 30-cent raise in the third year, the union said.

"We feel the changes made in the contract will allow our stores to continue to compete with the growing number of companies adding food to their mix of products in order to steal market share of the food business," Jim Doughtery, Local 655 president, said in a statement. "Unlike with these big box stores, Schnucks, Dierbergs and Shop 'n Save provide the finest quality foods at extremely competitive prices while ensuring their employees can earn a decent living and provide health care for their families."
