SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. Markets here accepted a load of apples yesterday at its new refrigerated distribution facility here — the first delivery into the 860,000-square-foot facility — as it prepares to launch full distribution of perishables from the new DC next week. The apples were scheduled to be shipped to the stores today, Jack Brown, chairman and chief executive officer, told SN. The facility will begin shipping full orders of refrigerated and frozen goods to its stores on Sept. 17 after frozen foods and meat are added to the new warehouse in the next few days, he added. Brown said over 90% of the stores’ perishables will come out of the warehouse here. The refrigerated distribution center includes multiple temperature zones that range from minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit to 55 degrees Fahrenheit; a humidity-controlled produce room; two humidity-controlled floral rooms; and energy-efficient air doors. The chain’s 1.2 million-square-foot dry grocery distribution center commenced operations in February.
