Stater Customer Counts Rising

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. Markets here said Wednesday customer counts are still rising as the momentum from its 75th anniversary promotions in 2011 continues to attract new customers.

The company picked up 1.2 million additional customers in the first fiscal quarter, nearly half as many as the 2.5 million it added last year, Jack Brown, chairman and chief executive officer, told bondholders during a financial conference call.

Sales for the 13-week  quarter, which ended Dec. 25, rose 6.9% to $960.7 million, and same-store sales also rose 6.9%. Net income was up 217.1% to $9 million — the result of a more normalized debt paydown for the quarter of $11.9 million, compared with $19.2 million a year ago following a refinancing, an industry analyst told SN.

Stater Bros keeps getting new customers because they are really good in the people business. Their cashiers greet you, give you eye contact, & you get the impresion that they are overqualified & double up with other important duties.

Stater Bros doesn't seem to hit & miss in hiring their people.

I live by their San Dimas Store, at this location they have ferocious competition, yet, they come out on top in Service. "Service" - Yes, service.

I believe that every employee has "profit responsibility" that every employee should bring in their relatives & friends. It wouldn't surprise me if Stater Bros came in #1 in this category.

As a teenager, I worked at Ralphs, So. Pasadena, then, 21 years with a leading Mexican chain, &, then, there's Stater Bros.

Congratulations to the entire family of employees of Stater Bros.
You guys are great ( & no price gimmicks - & we customers really appreciate that ).

With the increase in sales and profitiability and a decrease in debt, Is Stater Bros. looking to give back to their salaried employees, who have contributed to the achievement of such numbers?
