SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Customers at Stater Bros. Markets here have raised $373,780 in $1 donations at the checkstands since April 8 to fund the planting of new trees in areas of California devastated by wildfires.

The program, called "Reforest California," is being conducted in partnership with Coca-Cola and the California State Parks.

The money raised by Stater customers will pay for more than 835,000 trees, the company said; it will also supplement a fire prevention education program at six state parks.

A second portion of the fund-raising campaign, scheduled to run through May 19, will involve purchases of Coke products.
