SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. Charities — the newly established philanthropic arm of Stater Bros. Markets here — made its first donation last week: a $50,000 check to SafeHouse of the Desert, a local chapter of Operation SafeHouse, which offers emergency youth shelter for homeless children aged 11 to 18. The donation is part of the net proceeds from the inaugural Heroes with Hearts Golf Challenge, a fund-raising event Stater sponsored in early March. Jack Brown, chairman and chief executive officer of Stater, said the chain has a connection with SafeHouse of the Desert, with 27 of its stores designated as "safe places" for teens in crisis. The company said four other organizations are slated to receive contributions from the Stater Bros. Charities fund: Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of the Inland Empire; VA Loma Linda Healthcare System; The Unforgettables Foundation; and the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Scholarship Fund.
