Stop & Shop to Buy 3 King Kullen Stores

NEW YORK — Stop & Shop has agreed to buy three King Kullen locations on Staten Island here and plans to close one of them next month.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The sale of the three stores by King Kullen would eliminate its presence in that borough. The Bethpage, N.Y.-based chain had acquired five locations on Staten Island — four Waldbaums and one Pathmark — following the 1997 merger of Pathmark and A&P, and had since closed two of those stores.

"Selling our three stores to Stop & Shop enables us to concentrate resources elsewhere within the company," said Thomas Cullen, vice president of King Kullen, in a prepared statement.

Stop & Shop, which currently has two locations on Staten Island, said it would release more details later about its plans to convert the acquired locations.
