QUINCY, Mass. — As East Coast gas prices approach $4, Stop & Shop is increasing the number of fuel stations where shoppers can redeem its Gas Rewards.

Originally launched in 2008 with Stop & Shop's 70 branded gas stations, the program expanded to select Shell stations in Massachusetts last May. Beginning Friday, discounts can be cashed in at 600 Shell stations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and New York.

"The program is new in certain markets like Long Island and Westchester in N.Y., and its expanded in a lot of other markets," Stop & Shop spokeswoman Arlene Putterman told SN.

Stop & Shop's Gas Rewards are automatically earned when qualified purchases are made using the Stop & Shop loyalty card. A point is earned for every dollar spent, with 100 points equaling 10 cents off per gallon. Drivers can save up to $2.20 per gallon by swiping their Stop & Shop card at the pump, as long as rewards are redeemed within 30 days. There is a 35 gallon maximum fill-up per vehicle.
