QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop here, a division of Ahold USA, announced the launch of Scan It! Mobile, an app that allows customers to use an iPhone 3GS or 4G mobile device to scan and bag their groceries while they shop.

Scan It! Mobile is being piloted in three Massachusetts Stop & Shop stores in Quincy, Braintree and Plymouth. When the pilot is completed later this year, Stop & Shop will evaluate the timing of a rollout to additional stores in 2012. Shoppers can download the app for free at stopandshop.com/scanitmobile or the Apple app store.

Scan It! Mobile uses the same functionality featured by the Scan It! handheld device that Ahold USA makes available to loyalty card shoppers in more than 280 Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover, Md., stores. The functionality includes scanning, tallying the total dollar amount of purchases, checking out and receiving personalized offers based on each customer’s past purchasing history.

“It’s about customer choice,” said Mark McGowan, president, Stop & Shop New England Division, in a statement. “We’ve received tremendous feedback on our Scan It! technology because it allows customers to simplify their shopping experience — from tracking their budgets while they shop to reducing their time in store. We understand that mobile apps are changing the way consumers shop and are excited to be the first supermarket company in the United States to offer this option to customers.”

The Scan It! Mobile software was developed in partnership with Modiv Media here.
