WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Stop & Shop, Quincy, Mass., has installed advanced refrigeration technology at a 38,000-square-foot store here that opened in December. The technology, from Hill Phoenix, Conyers, Ga., consists of Second Nature systems for both low- and medium-temperature display cases and walk-in coolers.
The medium-temperature system cuts refrigerant charge by 50% compared with a standard DX system by using propylene glycol as a coolant. For its low-temperature display cases and walk-in freezers, the store installed a direct-expansion cascade system that uses carbon dioxide as a primary refrigerant. The cascade system makes sue of the same compressor system used to chill the propylene glycol.
"The glycol-carbon dioxide technology is the first application of this technology in the state and fits our focus on sustainability," said Cary Nix, manager of engineering for the New York/New England division of Stop & Shop, a division of Ahold USA.
