Strike Continues as Shaw’s Considers Outsourcing

Striking workers at Shaw’s distribution center here this week said the retailer is seeking to outsource its meat and deli operations to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

METHUEN, Mass. — Striking workers at Shaw’s distribution center here this week said the retailer is seeking to outsource its meat and deli operations to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

According to United Food and Commercial Workers Local 791, the sides were no closer to an agreement after negotiations with a federal mediator on Monday. It said Shaw’s withdrew previous contract offers and presented a new package with “drastic wage cuts” and conditioned upon replacement workers it is hiring staying at the facility, among other things. The UFCW said it had filed an unfair labor charge with the National Labor Relations Board alleging Shaw’s has bargained in bad faith.
