Supervalu Evaluates Response to Price Cuts

The Big Relief Price Cut program at Supervalu-owned Albertsons rolled into the chain’s 222 Southern California stores last week after its initial introduction last month in the Jewel-Osco chain in the Midwest and the Albertsons stores in Las Vegas.

FULLERTON, Calif. — The Big Relief Price Cut program at Supervalu-owned Albertsons rolled into the chain’s 222 Southern California stores last week after its initial introduction last month in the Jewel-Osco chain in the Midwest and the Albertsons stores in Las Vegas.

Company officials declined to say whether the company will expand the program to other divisions. “We’ll evaluate customer response before we consider rolling out elsewhere,” a Supervalu spokeswoman told SN.

The program involves reducing prices by up to 20% on thousands of items in several categories across the store “where pricing is most important to customers,” the company said, including basic stock-up items and staples.

The spokeswoman said Supervalu developed the Big Relief Price Cut program “because value-driven purchasing has led to the prevalence of the consumer ‘stock up’ mentality on staple products, and it is our belief that lowering prices on these key items will help increase customer visits to our store, drive long-term loyalty and increase referrals to our stores.”
