Supervalu Expands Nutrition Labeling

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu here on Thursday said it has expanded its nutritional labeling program to include the fresh-food departments and more detailed information on grocery products.

The Nutrition iQ program, launched in 2009, has been rolled out to more than 800 of Supervalu's locations under the Acme, Albertsons, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher's and Shoppers banners. The expanded program, which includes added nutritional attributes and and health benefit information, was recently launched at Albertsons locations in Southern California and Nevada, with other locations and banners set to roll out later this year.

Jewel-Osco stores in Chicago have also introduced the complete program, including the fresh departments, for the first time.

The Nutrition iQ program, which was developed in collaboration with dietitians from Joslin Clinic, affiliated with Harvard Medical School in Boston, features color-coded icons on shelf tags and signs to help shoppers identify healthy food options. With the expanded program, qualifying items in stores' fresh departments — produce, self-service meat and seafood — will now receive nutrition iQ signs.

New signs in the fresh departments will also now highlight key attributes, such as "Excellent/good source of fiber," "Helps support healthy digestion," "Excellent/good source of Vitamin C," "Promotes skin and immune health," "Excellent/good source of potassium" and "Important for muscle and bone health."
