Supervalu to 'Win With Fresh Produce'

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu will be rolling out a new local produce program to its banner stores beginning this summer, Craig Herkert, chief executive officer, said in remarks at the retailer's annual meeting here Thursday.

The porogram, facilitated by Supervalu's W. Newell specialty produce organization, will introduce special labels and signs noting the source of its products, with signs reading "Just arrived" to note freshest items and "Locally Harvested" to highlight items from nearby sources.

The program, dubbed "Win with Fresh Produce," is among the priorities for Supervalu in fiscal 2011, Herkert said.

"This program brings another level of hyper-local marketing into our stores, where the shopper knows that we support the local economy by purchasing locally, it sends a positive message about our stores," he said.

Supervalu shareholders at the meeting Thursday voted to approve a slate of 10 board members; to ratify the appointment of KPMG as auditor; and in favor of a proposal allowing them to vote at every third Supervalu annual meeting on the compensation policies and procedures, beginning in 2011.
