SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Michael Teel, the grandson of the founder of Raley’s Supermarkets here, is preparing to challenge Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market’s local entry with his own group of gourmet grocery stores that will emphasize fresh prepared foods, according to a story in Sunday’s Sacramento Bee. Teel could not be reached for comment yesterday. With Tesco poised to open 19 stores here next year, Teel plans to open the first unit of Good Eats — a combination bistro and market — during the winter on the site of a former restaurant. A second location, called Good Eats Grocer, is expected to open during the first half of 2009 on the site occupied of Corti Brothers Market here. The newspaper said a third location is scheduled to open in midtown next summer, and at least five more locations are planned around the region. The stores will reportedly emphasize prepared foods to go, with an inventory slightly larger than a Trader Joe’s, Teel told the newspaper.
