Tesco Opens First Zero-Carbon Supermarket

CAMBRIDGESHIRE, England — Tesco opened what it is calling the world's first zero-carbon supermarket here in the town of Ramsey, according to Cambridge Newspapers.

The new store includes a frame made from sustainable timber and special skylights to allow natural light in without adding to the heat. Vents control natural airflow to reduce energy, and the power the store does need is created by an on-site generator that runs on renewable sources such as vegetable oil.

Heating is also provided by the generator, while rainwater is used to flush the toilets, and gases that have almost no impact on the environment are used in the refrigerators. Customers will also be offered a free bus service from the town center as a more environmentally friendly way of doing their shopping.
