Two Giant Eagle Stores to Sell Beer

PITTSBURGH — Restaurant licenses that will allow for the sale of beer (limited to two six-packs) from in-store cafes have been obtained for two Giant Eagle stores here, according to reports.

The locations join 20 other supermarkets in the state granted similar licenses by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

Among them are several Wegmans stores that sell beer for both on- and off-premise consumption from their Market Cafes.

Earlier this year a Pennsylvania court sided with Wegmans after the Pennsylvania Malt Beverage Distributors Association tried to block the retailer from selling beer from its Market Cafes. The PMBD contended that the real beer seller was Wegmans’ supermarket since Market Cafes are attached by an interior passageway to the grocery stores.
