UFCW Files Brief in Wal-Mart Suit

WASHINGTON — The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the Change to Win labor group have filed a joint amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the plaintiffs in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores sex discrimination case.

WASHINGTON — The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and the Change to Win labor group have filed a joint amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the plaintiffs in the Dukes v. Wal-Mart Stores sex discrimination case.

The brief asks the court “to uphold the fundamental pillar of the Civil Rights Act and to ensure that the class-action process remains open to workers in all industries,” the groups said in a joint statement.

Wal-Mart, Bentonville, Ark., last year asked the U.S. Supreme Court for an appeal of a lower court’s ruling to grant class status to a sex-discrimination suit against it. The suit alleges that Wal-Mart paid women less than men in comparable positions and that women at the company received fewer promotions, and waited longer for promotions, than men. As many as 1.5 million workers could be part of the class.
