UFCW Files Labor Charge Against Wakefern/PriceRite

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — United Food and Commercial Workers Local 23 here has filed unfair labor charges against Wakefern Food Corp., saying the retailer demoted and cut pay for a worker trying to organize employees at a PriceRite store in North Providence, R.I.

According to the union, the worker, Joe Sorrentino, a night crew chief at a PriceRite store, was demoted and given a $3 hourly wage cut shortly after speaking out in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act at an event in Washington last month. The union is seeking reinstatement of his position and pay.

Wakefern officials were not immediately available for comment.
