UFCW Issues Support for Labor Nominee

The United Food & Commercial Workers Union yesterday called for “immediate confirmation” of President Obama’s choice for secretary of labor, Hilda Solis.

WASHINGTON — The United Food & Commercial Workers Union here yesterday called for “immediate confirmation” of President Obama’s choice for secretary of labor, Hilda Solis.

The Democratic lawmaker’s confirmation has been held up in the Senate, which some Republicans have questioned her stance on the Employee Free Choice Act, a labor bill that has been supported by Obama and other Democrats but is opposed by Republicans and by the supermarket industry. The bill, which passed the House last year but never made it through the Senate, would make it easier for unions to organize workplaces, calls for other labor-friendly changes.

“Solis’ expertise with labor issues, her experience as a federally elected official and her longtime role as a champion of workers are reason enough for confirmation,” the UFCW said.
