LOS ANGELES — Gelson's Markets, an 18-store division of Arden Group here, has received the fifth annual "Ben Schwartz Retail Grocery Visionary Award" presented by Unified Grocers.
The award is named after the longtime director and former chairman of Unified's predecessor company, who was present at the awards dinner. According to Unified, the award is given annually to an independent grocer that demonstrates “initiative, creativity and leadership within the industry,” and “has inspired others to think and act creatively and with passion.”
In accepting the award, Gelson's President Robert Stiles said, "Ben Schwartz is literally an icon in our industry, and Unified is a longtime industry partner. To receive an award of this stature from people that we truly respect and admire is tremendously meaningful to all of us at Gelson's."
