Union Contract Takes Effect at Canadian Wal-Mart

A Wal-Mart discount store in Quebec began operating under union contract this week after a mediator intervened in the long-delayed process.

ST. HYACYNTHE, Quebec — A Wal-Mart discount store here began operating under union contract this week after a mediator intervened in the long-delayed process.

The contract covers 180 members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 501 and includes wage increases, seniority rights and a formal grievance procedure, the union said. Several other Wal-Mart locations in Canada are in negotiations for contracts as well.

In 2007, Wal-Mart shuttered a store in Jonquiere, Quebec, where workers had sought to form a union. Wal-Mart could not be reached for comment yesterday.
