Union Workers in Arizona Agree to Extension

Union workers at Safeway, Fry’s and Smith’s stores in Arizona represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 99 have agreed to a contract extension through Dec. 15 as negotiators work on a new deal with employers.

PHOENIX — Union workers at Safeway, Fry’s and Smith’s stores in Arizona represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 99 here have agreed to a contract extension through Dec. 15 as negotiators work on a new deal with employers. Fry’s and Smith’s are division of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.

According to a message posted by Jon Flora, president of Fry’s, contract language issues have been resolved, but wage and health care issues have not. The sides are working to replace a contract that was to have expired in October but has now been extended twice. The sides have the option of continuing the extension on a week-to-week basis after Dec. 15, through Jan. 30.
