LUBBOCK, Texas – United Supermarkets pledged this month $150,000 over the next three years to support The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Home Transitional Living program, which includes emergency shelter, transitional shelter and transitional housing.

The United pledge represents a lead gift of $50,000 each of the next three years to fund renovations of the Red Shield Home's Transitional Housing program. The planned renovations include four buildings that will serve as independent living apartments for families in the program, with each building serving two families at any given time. Renovations are expected to begin in late summer, with occupancy planned by April 2012.

"The Salvation Army has been serving the Lubbock area since the early 1920s and has been an integral part of our community’s efforts to meet the needs of our homeless population throughout that time," said Robert Taylor, United’s chief executive and a former member of The Salvation Army board.

In other news, United said it plans extensive store remodeling in the Abilene, Texas market where it has four locations. Three of its stores are slated for remodels to mark the 20th year that United has been doing business in Abilene. The retailer entered the market in 1991 when it purchased five Lone Star Market stores. Since then one store was closed and another replaced with a new 45,000 square foot market in 2004.
