WASHINGTON — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan yesterday announced a new local agriculture initiative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture called “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food,” which will promote the consumption of locally raised foods.

"Americans are more interested in food and agriculture than at any other time since most families left the farm," Merrigan said in a release. "'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' seeks to focus that conversation on supporting local and regional food systems to strengthen American agriculture by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and spurring economic opportunity in rural communities."

USDA also announced that “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” will initially be supported with $65 million in agency funding.
