SCARBOROUGH, Maine — In the wake of the security breach at stores operated by Hannaford Bros. here that reportedly exposed more than 4 million card numbers and led to 1,800 cases of fraud, Visa, San Francisco, said yesterday that it is working to address the fallout with Hannaford, its banks and law enforcement. “Visa is in the process of providing card issuers the compromised accounts so they can take steps to protect consumers through independent fraud monitoring and, if needed, reissuing cards,” Visa said in a statement. “Additionally, Visa is monitoring for any related fraud on a real-time basis.” The security breach affected Hannaford stores, Sweetbay stores in Florida and certain independently owned retail locations in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products. On Hannaford’s website, Ronald C. Hodge, president and chief executive officer, said the chain is “cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to ensure those customers who may be affected by the theft are protected. We realize this incident may raise concerns and questions for our customers, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this attack on our system may cause you.”
