Wal-Mart Adds Green Cleaners

BENTONVILLE, Ark — Wal-Mart’s shelves will become a little greener this week as Seventh Generation laundry detergent, dish soap, disinfecting wipes and all-purpose sprays are introduced in 1,500 locations.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart’s shelves will become a little greener this week as Seventh Generation laundry detergent, dish soap, disinfecting wipes and all-purpose sprays are introduced in 1,500 locations.

The retailer’s choice of non-toxic products is part of its commitment to making earth-friendly items more accessible to shoppers, the company said.

“As part of Walmart’s broad sustainability goal to sell products that sustain people and the environment, we are always looking to expand our number of sustainable offerings,” said Al Dominguez, Wal-Mart Stores' vice president of chemical and paper goods, in a statement.

Wal-Mart and Seventh Generation shared information about their respective consumer targets before Wal-Mart decided which stores would provide the most appropriate fit for the products.

“They're targeted to be in areas most highly concentrated with consumers who are looking for green alternatives,” Chuck Maniscalco, chief executive officer of Seventh Generation, told SN.

An expanded assortment of products, including Seventh Generation baby wipes and diapers, will roll out on Walmart.com in September.

The trading partners will also team to educate shoppers through Wal-Mart’s mom bloggers, Facebook and the 7GenBlog about healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyles.

Seventh Generation will also participate in Wal-Mart’s Chemical Intensive Products Sustainable Network, which has developed an ingredient screening program for household and personal care products sold at Wal-Mart.
