Wal-Mart Boosts Support for Military Families

MINNEAPOLIS — Wal-Mart plans to double its support for military families to $20 million, up from $10 million, through the end of 2015, Bill Simon, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart's Bentonville, Ark.-based U.S. operations, told the American Legion Wednesday at its 93rd annual convention here.

MINNEAPOLIS — Wal-Mart Stores plans to double its support for military families to $20 million, up from $10 million, through the end of 2015, Bill Simon, president and chief executive officer of the company's Bentonville, Ark.-based U.S. operations, told the American Legion Wednesday at its 93rd annual convention here.

The funds are intended to promote job training for veterans and to support nonprofit groups that assist veterans in pursuing higher education and enabling them to reintegrate into civilian life more easily.

Simon encouraged veterans to seek employment at Wal-Mart. "These are good jobs and good careers. Inside our stores every day the American dream comes to life," he said. "We love to hire veterans. Veterans not only have a record of performance under pressure but they also are educated and technologically savvy, quick learners and team players."

Simon also called on the government to help get the economy back on track by promoting American exports and free-trade agreements; passing a comprehensive reform of the corporate tax code to broaden the tax base and lower the overall tax rate; and restoring American manufacturing.
