Wal-Mart Discontinues Free Bags at Three Northern California Stores

Wal-Mart Stores here has stopped giving out free bags at three stores in Northern California as a test.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here has stopped giving out free bags at three stores in Northern California as a test.

According to a company spokeswoman, customers at two stores in Sacramento and one in Ukiah can either bring their own bags from home or buy polypropylene fabric bags at the stores — 15 cents for a smaller size, 50 cents for a larger size.

Wal-Mart began the test in October at the three stores because of customer interest in environmental issues at those locations, the spokeswoman said.

Wal-Mart initially encouraged customers to bring their own bags and offered bags for sale; it stopped giving out free bags at the three stores the first weekend of the year and began offering bags for sale at 52 other stores across Northern California last week.

The spokeswoman said it's too early to reach a conclusion on the test, which is scheduled to continue "through the first part of the year," she told SN.
