BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores here on Monday said it has launched walmartnyc.com, a website promoting its entry into New York City.

The world's largest retailer currently has no stores in the city, but has expressed interest in opening locations for the past several years, but has met opposition from Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers union and others.

On the new website, Wal-Mart reports that 71% of New Yorkers support Wal-Mart's entry into the Big Apple.

"We know that job creation and access to affordable food are significant needs in the city and we think our stores can be part of the solution," the company said in a prepared statement.

Next month, the company said it plans to set up informational kiosks at local stores in Secaucus and North Bergen, N.J., and Valley Stream, N.Y, to promote the site.
