BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here plans to open a new, smaller food-and-drug store format of approximately 75,000 square feet in Torrance, Calif., the company told SN.

The store will be located in a former Mervyn's Department Store, although the company would not say when it would open. Because the site is already zoned for retail use, Wal-Mart will not have to go through a public planning process with the city — a process that has been used by the company's opponents to keep it from opening supercenters in Southern California.

There were published reports of a second, similarly sized store, opening at a former Mervyn's in San Diego. However, the company declined comment on those reports.
