WASHINGTON — The World Environment Center here and Wal-Mart Stores, Bentonville, Ark., said yesterday they plan to launch a major initiative in El Salvador and Guatemala to increase cleaner production and energy efficiency practices in the two countries.

Wal-Mart and the WEC said they will provide technical assistance to more than 24 small- and medium-sized Wal-Mart suppliers in the areas of energy and water savings; waste, raw material and emissions reductions; implementing environmental management systems; and accessing financial resources.

The WEC is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to advance sustainable development through the business strategies and operations of its member companies, in partnership with government and other stakeholders.

The project will be conducted through the U.S. Department of State-funded "Cleaner Production Private Sector Partnerships" in Central America.
